Abstract

Purpose: This non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest study was performed to examine the effects of nursing protocol which included provision of information before, during, and after cystoscopy with emotional support and relaxation.

Methods: Dependent variables of this study were state-anxiety before cystoscopy and pain during and after cystoscopy. The nursing protocol was composed of assessment, intervention and evaluation phases based on nursing process for patients under whole process of cystoscopy. Subjects were 26 cystoscopy patients for experimental group and 24 cystoscopy patients for control group. Data were collected at a university hospital in D Metropolitan City and analyzed using SPSS/Win 19.0.

Results: The experimental group on which nursing protocol was applied experienced less state-anxiety than control group (t=-2.45, p=.018). The experimental group experienced less pain than control group.

Conclusion: According to the results, the effects of nursing protocol for cystoscopy patients were identified in reducing anxiety and pain. This nursing protocol is expected to be widely applied to other invasive endoscopic procedures as well.
